Enigmatic singer-songwriter Lucky Ali has just released a video single titled Sacrifice which he says is "a song for right now". Several years in the making, the track is a collaborative effort between Ali and the Bengaluru-based Hip Hop/Reggae/Dancehall Crew - Low Rhyderz.
Low Rhyderz met Ali sometime in 2010 which led the way to a jam, then a tour and later some music; Sacrifice is one of those tracks.
"All I have to say about the song is in the song itself. Watch the video with understanding," says Ali.
There are many layers to the artist who is not just a living legend of Indian Music but an artist whose appeal extends far beyond the number of releases, generations and time. And while he’s a balladeer with many stories, he’s also his own man, who steps back into the public domain only when he has something to say, be it a heartfelt commentary on sociological/philanthropic matters or his expression through music.
Beyond his spectacular popular success, Lucky remains one the most intriguing musicians in India as a result of the brave artistic choices he has made. It's no secret that Lucky Ali's enigmatic voice has a large and loyal army of followers, that spans across generations and geographical boundaries. The same sense of affection and relatability, led to his last release which was a well-received collaboration between Ali and Israeli musician Eliezer Cohen Botzer. The single has been hailed as a traveller’s anthem and lapped up by music aficionados across the world.
Low Rhyderz on the collaboration:
Working with Lucky Ali has made me a better human being. Working on a track with him is a humbling experience and something I could have never imagined in my wildest dreams. I’m forever grateful, - Xstacy Sash.
It was a great boost to my own abilities as a songwriter to be appreciated and approved by a legendary artist whom we grew up to. Of course, it was living a dream moment. And as a young artist, there was a lot to learn. I thoroughly enjoyed the course with great musical minds coming together to create this piece.- King Jassim.
Working on the song with Lucky Ali I got an insight into his wisdom and experienced the soul-touching voice first hand while we were in the studio recording the track. - Main E Yak.

Big Bang Music's new addition to their roster, singer-songwriter RAHI's song 'Sarmast' was re-released recently. Born and bred in Kashmir, Rahi’s Sarmast is a collaboration with the Garo tribe of the Tura village, Meghalaya. Sarmast's unique soundscapes are nuanced with Sufi melody garbed in the eastern musicality and Garo lyrics. The songsmith is known for songs like Kasheer and Tu Le Ja Mujhe.
Talking about the song, Rahi said, ‘Music has been a way of storytelling for me since I can remember. Sarmast is a tale of losing oneself to the surrounding. The surprising thing is, the people I collaborated with did not understand the Sufi language, so music was the only bridge that got us together and brought Sarmast to its existence. The fact that we learnt from each other, despite the language barrier inspired me to do this collaboration. The soulful energy the Garo community brought to Sarmast is beyond expression. The mixture of the lyrics and the melody blended together so well that the rawness of the composition defined the feeling we shared while making Sarmast. I believe we all are travellers, journeying our way towards what seeks us and the sole motive of making music is to bring communities together, learn from one another and present the creation like never before.’

Faridkot recently released a new track titled, Baithe Baithe, which is all about capturing the feelings of living in the lockdown. The very different kind of emotions that one goes through: listlessness, little joys, little sorrows, frustrations etc. It shows how we’re coping and learning to live in this suspended reality which is almost an endless loop.
How the lockdown has shown that emotions don't have meaning if you have no one to share them with. And even though we can't meet in these times, letting people know that we’re thinking about them matters. Through this song we want to send people happy vibes in these times of confusion and tension. This is a song for everyone locked in by themselves, a song for everyone who is away from loved ones, a song about just taking things one day at a time.
In this song Faridkot have collaborated with their friend and well know actor Mrinal Dutt.
Faridkot was formed in 2008 when Inderjeet Singh (IP) and Rajarshi Sanyal came together to make some fun and exciting original music. 10 years and 2 albums later, namely, Ek and Phir Se?, Faridkot have performed over 500 shows alongside all the biggest names in the country and swayed audiences across the country. They call their genre Confused Pop and have been hailed as one of the foremost original Hindi pop-rock bands in the country (with hits such as Laila, Haal e Dil, Madho).

After releasing his 11-song album titled ‘Here We Go,’ Sooraj is now working on bringing those songs to life on the screen with a series of music videos. ‘The Actor,’ he says, is the first of more videos that he has planned. “Moving through the masquerade, I just want to see your face,” pleads Sooraj in his newest music video for his song ‘The Actor.’ In the video, Sooraj tells the classic tale of a young artist with big dreams in the unforgiving world of Hollywood – with a twist.
Sooraj recently graduated from Musician’s Institute, Hollywood with a degree in vocal performance but has been playing the keyboards since age one and a half, passing his Trinity College Grade 8 keyboard exam at age six, and playing multiple instruments such as the guitar, drums, bass while combining them all into music production. His other music videos for the songs ‘Nemesis’ and ‘City Beat’ raked up over 60,000 and 150,000 views on YouTube respectively, while he performed his songs from the album both in the US and in India. He is also a private pilot, and has in fact shot an aerial scene for the music video from the flight deck of a small aircraft.
The video, shot by LA-based filmmaker Jonas Gaida is a reflection on Sooraj’s own stories and observations of the Hollywood glitz and what goes on behind the scenes. “The song is about people who start out with stars in their eyes and end up pushed to the ground by the world around them. It was inspired by true-life stories of people being forced to warp their original identity and aspirations by the big bad world who wants them to be someone they aren’t.” With a smile, he adds, “I walk on the Hollywood Walk of Fame every day and all I step on are pink stars on the boulevard. I thought to myself, is this the pinnacle of fame – to have a star on the boulevard and have people walk over you? That was what sparked the writing of this song.”
‘The Actor’ can be found on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, and the song is available to stream as part of Sooraj’s album ‘Here We Go,’ on all major platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Saavn and Amazon Play.

One of the finest jazz drummers in India, Tarun Balani explores electronic music in his solo project, Seasonal Affected Beats. Referring to what he does as ‘improvised electronic music’, as Seasonal Affected Beats he brings the finesse, controlled volatility and discipline of jazz and merges it with malleability of electronic beats.
Imagined as a trans-media electronic project – that was launched in 2018 – Seasonal Affected Beats sees Tarun make music through the prism of his reality, formed by his experiences of the world around him. Themes like mental health, climate change, rapid urbanisation, socio-political issues and digital existentialism play on his mind, and find their way into his lush and tactile productions that pulse with emotions.
2 ° (2 degrees), his new EP, releases on March 13, and was the musical output outcome of his thoughts and experiences of living in a “dystopic, apocalyptic world” (read Delhi’s pollution levels) and the impending dangers of climate change. The name, 2 ° (2 degrees), in fact comes from the Paris Agreement
On Friday, he released a new track called Prelude, from his soon-to-be-released EP, 2 ° (2 degrees).
“The music of 2° (2 degrees) is composed like a suite, with each piece leading into the other and to be considered as separate movements within the suite,” says Tarun of the EP. “The song ‘Prelude’ introduces the listener to the sonic landscape of the EP, from spacey and minimal, to complex and disorderly. I hope to evoke a feeling of intrigue and leave the listeners wanting more,” he adds.
The slow crescendo of synths on ‘Prelude’ conveys the urgency of the situation and, perhaps, of Tarun’s state of mind.
You can listen to the track here:

It is a wonderful love song with a very fresh soundscape. Sometimes I feel like singing it, and at times dancing to it!. Sharing her thoughts Prakriti Kakar speaks,“Tum Na Ho is a super special track that I had the opportunity to hop on for VYRL Originals. It’s a very cool pop approach to a love song highlighting the concept of a Long Distance Relationship and is also extremely relatable. It’s composed by M Ajay Vaas and would be my first collaboration track this year. I instantly fell in love with the lyrics and the music when I heard it for the first time and can’t wait for everyone to finally hear it. This would be my second release this year and no better time to release than February which is the month of celebrating love! It also stars the extremely talented Awez and Nagma and their chemistry pops another flavor to the track and definitely takes the video to the next level. I’m absolutely hooked to the chorus lines and I hope everybody feels the same way! Stoked to be releasing this on 20th Feb and I hope everybody celebrates the spirit of fun , love and feelings with this one!”
Speaking about Tum Na Ho M Ajay Vaas comments, “Tum Na Ho is a track that is very precious to me as its one of those compositions that have come straight from my heart. I was always a fan of Arjun Kanungo and I am glad that both Arjun and Prakriti Kakkar came together to do this song, I couldn't have gotten any better duo to do this. VYRL Originals, always gives you more than what you expect, and the best part is that they understand the vision of composers as well. I think they have done complete justice to the song and I want to thank the entire team of VYRL Originals and Mohit Suri for believing in my compositions."
Speaking about the track, Vinit Thakkar, Chief Operating Officer, Universal Music India & South Asia, said,“2020 is going to be the year of collaborations and we are super excited to get the first collaboration going between our VYRL artists, Arjun Kanungo, Prakriti Kakar and M Ajay Vaas for our latest single Tum Na Ho. Bindis and Bangles is an ode to the traditions of the past and the technologies of the future, all while shining a spotlight on India’s rich and unique culture. With this track, Kumari delicately drives home an apropos message of how God is omnipresent; and spiritual realization in modern times isn’t a fallacy and can be attained without the trappings of technology.
The intrepid and empowering video directed by The Fictionary, with its’ striking imagery, was created and curated by an all-female team in collaboration with the New York-based cyberpunk-artist Sam Madhu, who also directed visuals for “Karma” from Kumari’s 2019 EP, BLOODLINE. With retro-futurism at its core, the video comes to life with fictional characters from the ancient Indian world such as palanquin bearers, dancers and sages who are equipped with tools of the future, such as virtual reality and holograms. In the video, Kumari is portrayed as an ethereal apparition who glitches into reality and is perceived as a Goddess from another dimension. As they worship her, they in turn relinquish technology and awaken their own third eyes– visually represented in the form of complex digital interfaces.
Reflecting on the track, Kumari states, “Bindis and Bangles is my most ambitious project, working with an all-female team was empowering and inspiring. The Bindi for me is the third eye, and the visual encourages all to keep their third eye open. I’m so excited to share this song with all my fans.”
Produced by Zero, who is of American origin, the track is co-written by India’s premier hip-hop star and Kumari’s long standing co-collaborator, DIVINE, and packs a passionate and powerful punch, loaded with robust rhymes and ferocious delivery over a nuanced beat with international reverberations. Armed with a compelling groove and spirited lyrics, the track sets the perfect exemplar of a vision of India’s future – inspired by its’ past.
With a maiden headlining North American tour and the release of her documentary "Raja Kumari: So Far" which spotlighted the importance of embracing one’s uniqueness by narrating her resilient story of empowerment as a woman of colour, 2019 marked many firsts for Kumari. She became the first Indian artist to host the American Music Awards Red Carpet and to perform at Formula One (F1) Singapore Grand Prix. With an album and tour in the works, we’ll hear more from the MTV Hustle judge in the near future. Stay tuned!

VYRL Originals brings in 2020 with an upbeat, groovy and a glamourous song, ‘Kehndi Haan Kehndi Naa’ by the supremely talented singers- song writers and performers Sukriti and Prakriti. This song also features Arjun Bijlani, the television heartthrob, who is making his music video debut with this track. ‘Kehndi Haan Kehndi Naa’ is a melody that will make you want to get on your feet and groove while it tells you a fun-loving story. Written by Siddhant Kaushal, this song is sung and composed by Sukriti & Prakriti, and music produced by Rishabh Kant shares a melody which is deeply rooted to our Hindustani music culture that also carries a futuristic 2020 vision. This song is a combination of smooth RnB guitars and glossy textures merged with melodies of Indian folk and authentic traditional instruments like Harmonium and Dholak.
Tushar Kalia, a popular bollywood choreographer directed this vibrant and vivacious video, shot is the picturesque location of Armenia. The video portrays a story of two mischievous, young beautiful sisters i.e. Sukriti & Prakriti who play their twin card and decide a prank on the handsome Arjun Bijlani by confusing him of their identities. Later, he realizes that he has been fooled and ends it on a friendly note. The song engulfs the fun and zealous moments of a newly formed infatuation which usually starts one-sided and in this case, it’s from a girls' perspective.
Talking about the release, Sukriti and Prakriti share “The thought behind ‘Kendi Haan Kendi Naa’ is to make a mark on the pop-culture in India. This song is very special to us because this is our first track where we have infused various elements from RnB, folk to Dholak. Siddhanth Kaushal the lyricist and Rishabh Kant the music producer have added their charm to it. We are stoked to have collaborated with Arjun Bijlani who has taken the video to a whole new level. This is our third single in the world of non-film music and we are truly grateful to VYRL Originals for believing in our vision and supporting us as their artists to make our non-film music dreams come true! Starting 2020 with this being our first release of the year, we are so excited to share this with the world and also set the tone for the rest of the year. We are hoping everyone enjoys this as much as we did creating this one! Cheers”

The Mallroad Project – Hindi Indie Rock Band holds musical soiree on different themes which is relevant to today’s youth. It has its roots in Delhi circuits, blending in tradition, musicianship, and imagination.
The band is now releasing its new single ‘Kaafila’ on 14th December. The song is about a sense of belonging with the people we travel this journey of life with and how they give us a sense of purpose.
"Kaafila" - a Hindi word derived from Arabic, means a caravan, a procession or a collectivity in travel - is a reflection of our lives. An expedition we all start alone towards the destination and as we move, we come across new people in life and a new story begins with each one of them, the kaafila keeps on growing. Often in our lives, we forget to appreciate this kaafila we have, the song is to remind us of how important these people are to us.
We are born alone, we die alone. Between this birth and death, we live alone. Life is so much better when we create the illusion for a moment that we're not alone. In this journey, we come across people concerning family, friends and our loved ones. Our hopes and dreams soon begin to associate with the group of people (Kaafila) that we consider important in our life. We stay together, move together and share our joys and sorrows while we travel together in this journey of life.
The song is set to release on 14th December. The song will be available on the band’s YouTube channel as well as on all other platforms like Gaana, OkListen and Apple Music.
You can listen the song here: Kaafila - Google Drive
Past songs & releases
The band had lately been consciously talking about critical issues that plague society. Their last release,Thurky Boss, was inspired by the #MeToo movement and candidly addressed the harassment faced by women in their daily routine. Prior to this, they released Dehshatgard- voice against terrorism – a song that addressed the social unrest in India. They also, had released a satirical political song, Who is the real Pappu? that asked people to be careful about believing blindingly in what they were told by netas. Through songs such as these, the band has presented their strong opinions on social issues.
“Through our music, we want to contribute to a progressive future and an equal society”.
The band released their first EP Naazi in 2017. The main theme of the EP revolves around exploring the various nuances and emotions of a modern-day romance. The sound ranges from soft soothing melodies to some groovy rock and roll. The EP consists of the titular song Naazi, Nasha, Dil Kyun Khamosh Hai, and one of their most popular songs Tu Kahan.
Their second EP Behti Hawa is an experimental live set performed by the band to capture the raw energy of an in-studio live set-up. Released in September 2018, the EP has a beautiful hard-rock interpretation of A.R. Rahman’s Dil Se apart from the other song Behti Hawa, Tere Khayalon Mein and the captivating Saasein.
One of their songs, Pareshaan gets you thinking as it talks about how we forget to appreciate our lives and get stuck on the darker side of everyday lives.
The Sterling Reserve Music Project, an enabler platform for independent artists, chases the next emerging sound on the platform with the soca music inspired song ‘Secret Sauce’ by Indian - American singer-songwriter, Monica Dogra. ‘Secret Sauce’ is Monica’s first musical collaboration with international beat maker and soca music producer Keshav Chandradath Singh.

The song is about how once love enters your life, everything becomes magical and fantastic. Monica Dogra describes the vibe of the song as a sensual mash up of Caribbean island music, reggae (ton), soca and pop.

Speaking about the release of ‘Secret Sauce,’ Monica Dogra said, “I am very happy that ‘Secret Sauce’ has finally come to life. Working with Keshav was a dream. Soca has been a genre I’ve never played with as a composer, but I’ve played out as a DJ for so long and Keshav is one of the top soca producers in the world! He’s worked with the best. The making of the song was like entering an uncharted territory which is just how I like it. “Secret Sauce is so different in multiple aspects from anything I’ve ever done and as a musician, I can proudly say that I made a song that I’d love to listen to on repeat for the first time in my life.” She further added, “While writing the lyrics, my mind was thinking about the immense courage it takes to express one’s affection for another person. Upon hearing the melody of the song for the first time, I just closed my eyes and the lyrics started to stream out of my conscious and onto the paper. It was a beautiful flow... I’m grateful to tap into that. For the music video I wanted to bring back my first costar, Prateik Babbar from the feature film Dhobi Ghat. That film changed both our lives so much and we’ve maintained a great friendship through the years. I believe time has made us better. Working with him was sweet! I kept saying it all felt like honey. Just what ‘Secret Sauce’ is all about.”

The lead guitarist of Indian rock band Parikrama, Sonam Sherpa passed away on Friday. He was 48.Sonam Sherpa suffered a cardiac arrest. The guitarist was in his hometown Kalimpong, West Bengal.
There are a handful of rock bands in India that can proudly claim that they have been around for 30 years. Parikrama is one of them and Sherpa, along with mates Nitin Malik and Subir Malik, have hung around right from the start at the dawn of economic liberalisation in India where not just foreign goods but even culture flowed in freely— and they never really stopped until today.
Sherpa had been a part of Parikrama as its lead guitarist since its inception in 1999. The band recently visited Arunachal Pradesh to shoot a song, Tears of the Wizard. Shot in Mechuka Valley, the song was released in August last year.
The news comes as a shocker for the music fraternity of the country as Sherpa’s work has inspired and left a mark among several musicians.

Those of you who have been around from the 1960's through the 1990's will remember the vibrant live music scene in almost every starred hotel in India. Those were the days when you walked into a nightclub like 'Rendezvous' at The Taj Mahal hotel and 'Supper Club' at the Oberoi Sheraton in Mumbai to see curtains going up on a band that was the prime focus of these outlets. Every seat in these restaurants allowed an unobstructed view of the band that performed every night on resident contracts. Today all this has disappeared thanks to some ridiculously high entertainment taxes on live music. Today, non off these hotels have complete bands playing save for a few that feature small duos or solo singers. The Lodhi in New Delhi, recently listed among the world's best hotels, decided to step in and rewind to the good old days. They got Goa's premier jazz quartet 'Jazz Junction' to move to Delhi on a resident contract and the decision has paid off in terms of footfalls generated by the band. Jazz Junction featuring singer Daniella Rodrigues, pianist Tony Dias,
bassist Colin D'Cruz and drummer Angelo Colasco began playing at The Lodhi in June 2018. Four months into the contract the band generated a sizeable following, with quite a few high profile guests choosing to celebrate their special occasion at the Elan bar where the band performs. Against all odds the rewind option proved to be a huge success and hopefully other properties around the country takes the cue to trigger a whole new revival of live music.
